WHAT IS SPORT CLIMBING?
Sport climbing refers to a type of climbing where routes have permanently placed protection points spaced intermittently up the wall. Climbers, wearing a harness tied to one end of a rope, will attach quickdraws to the permanently placed protection points as they climb. A belayer Will use a belay device to keep the required tension on the rope so the climber can safely ascend and be lowered off the wall after finishing a climb
GETTING STARTED - PARTNERS AND GEAR
One of the best aspects of sport climbing is its social nature; you need a trusted partner. Your climbing partner is directly responsible for your safety, and since climbing is inherently dangerous, it requires a high level of trust and communication. Additionally, when just starting, your partner should be a mentor with an extensive understanding of sport climbing. Also, a mentor can help you know what gear to purchase. The primary gear needed to start single-pitch sport climbing is listed below. It is essential that you take a class or find a mentor to teach you how to use gear effectively.
Some Basic Gear
- Rope bag
- Harness
- Belay device
- Rock climbing shoes
- Quickdraws (12)
- Chalk and chalk bag
- Helmet
- Personal Anchor System (PAS)
FINDING CLIMBING CRAGS (LOCATIONS)
Besides going with someone who knows the area. the best way to find climbing routes and crags (climbing areas with multiple climbing routes) is to use Mountain Proiect. It has an online forum that describes itself as "A Free, Crowd-Sourced Guide to Climbing the World" and an app. This forum contains 310,942 climbs, making it the most comprehensive repository for rock climbing and its various offshoots, including sport climbing. When using the website/app, you can explore and find climbing routes, filter by types of climbing and locations, see comments and posts from other climbers, and find directions for the climb's approach (the hike or walk to reach the base of the climbing route).
One of My Favorite Climbs up Logan Canon
Arrowhead
5.9+:
This is another 50ft one-pitch climb up Logan Canyon with a fantastic view. The area is called Preston Valley Pinnacle due to this climb being an exposed tower overlooking the canyon. It is a must-do if you're looking for unique climbs in Cache Valley.
